... Feldkirch celebrated its 800th anniversary as a town in 2018?
Feldkirch was first mentioned in documents as a town in 1218, when Count Hugo I von Montfort donated the Church of St John (market square) and the associated monastery to the Order of St John. The town remained in the hands of the Montfort family as the County of Feldkirch until 1375 and was sold to the Habsburgs by Count Rudolf V of Montfort in the same year.

The mathematician, theologian, cartographer, astronomer and astrologer Georg Joachim Rheticus was one of the town's great sons. He also made a significant contribution to the publication of Copernicus' writings. Rheticus was the first to sketch a sundial that could even be used to determine the date. This is why the "Prayer Chair" was installed on the cathedral square in 2009, a sundial based on the principle of the noon line, artistically realised by Hanno Metzler.

The Counts of Montfort laid the foundations in the 12th/13th century for Feldkirch to dominate Vorarlberg viticulture for a long time. The Ardetzenberg, Blasenberg and Amberg as well as the slope below Schattenburg Castle were full of vines. In the 19th century, there were once 32 wine cellars in the town. Below Schattenburg Castle, on Ardetzenberg and Amberg, there are still small vineyards today that are lovingly tended. One of the fine wines from Feldkirch is the Ardetzenberger Rivaner, also known as Müller-Thurgau.

In the summer of 2008, a sequence for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" was filmed in Feldkirch town centre. Leading actor Daniel Craig took part in a car chase with his adversaries through the Marktgasse.
